If you were to flip through the pages of a history book, you may only find a handful of women mentioned. Despite the lack of women written about in history, there were, and still are, many strong and influential women that have made a lasting impact on the world. Such is the case with Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa, or Saint Teresa of Calcutta, impacted the world in a way few people have done before. She devoted her life to God and the help of others that were outcasted because of wealth, or lack thereof, health, disability, and age. Mother Teresa overcame challenges and stood true to her beliefs for the entirety of her mission. Born August 26, 1910, in Skopje Macedonia, Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu grew up in a faith-devoted family deeply involved in their parish. Her father, Dranafile, died when Agnes was only eight years old, so she became very close with her mother, Nikola. Nikola implanted in Agnes a deep commitment to charity and told Agnes to â€Å"never eat a single mouthful unless you are sharing it with others.† By the age of twelve, Agnes felt a call from God to lead a faithful life. When she was eighteen years old, she moved to Ireland to join the Sisters of Loreto in Dublin. Here, she took the name Sister Mary Teresa after Saint Therese of Lisieux. A year later, she traveled to India for the novitiate period- a time of training, preparation, and discerning a religious member must undergo prior to taking vows. In May 1931, Sister Mary Teresa made her First Profession of Vows. Sister Mary Teresa was sent to Calcutta following her First Profession where she was to teach at Saint Mary’s H igh School for Girls. Six years later, on May 24, she took her Final Profession of Vows and upon this, changed her title to Mother Teresa, as was a custom for the Loreto nuns. In 1994, Mother Teresa became the principal of Saint Mary’s and taught the children through her example how to lead a life devoted to God. On September 10, 1946, Mother Teresa received a second call from God, this time telling her to abandon her job at Saint Mary’s to help aid the poorest and sickest people. Two years later, she finally got official permission to leave her convent. Mother Teresa went through six months of basic medical training, then went right to work. Right away she started an open-air school for the poor and made a home for people who were dying. Mother Teresa along with a few other members founded the Missionaries of Charity. With more and more donations pouring in between the 1950s and 1960s, Mother Teresa established many more services including a leper colony, nursing home, mobile health clinic, family clinic, and an orphanage. In 1971 Mother Teresa made a voyage to New York City to start a house of charity- her first house in America -and secretly in 1982, she went to both Christian East Beirut and Muslim West Beirut in Lebanon to help children from both faiths. Mother Teresa went bac k to New York in 1985 to speak at the 40th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly and to open the Gift of Love, a home for people who were infected with AIDS. Mother Teresa accomplished many things in her long, charitable life. She established centers for the sick, the dying, and the poor; she reached out to the outcasted and offered comfort; she traveled all over the world to help less fortunate, and she led by example how to be a good person devoted to Christ. Mother Teresa influenced others to do the same as well. As time went on, more and more people joined the Missionaries of Charity and today there are over one million co-workers for the organization. People recognized Mother Teresa’s work and she was awarded multiple times. She was awarded the Padma Shi from the President of India in August 1962, the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize in January 1971, the Nobel Peace Prize in December 1979, and the United States Congressional Gold Medal in June 1997 along with one hundred twenty other awards for her excellence. Although nobody could tell from her caring and giving persona, Mother Teresa was experiencing challenges with her health and faith throughout her life. Her health slowly deteriorated for many years while she kept traveling and working. On September 5, 1997, at the age of eighty-seven, Mother Teresa died of heart, lung, and kidney problems. Shortly after her death, a book full of letters Mother Teresa wrote to her spiritual advisors was published. The letters revealed she was struggling to find her faith for the last fifty years of her life. She wrote that she felt Jesus had abandoned her and that she was sharing in Christ’s Passion, specifically when Jesus calls out, â€Å"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?† In one riveting letter, Mother Teresa writes, â€Å"Where is my Faith- even deep down right in there is nothing, but emptiness and darkness- My God- how painful is this unknown pain- I have no Faith- I dare not utter the words and thoughts that crowd in my heart- and make me suffer untold agony.† Despite feeling lost in her faith, Mother Teresa still lived a devote life with an unwavering commitment to helping others. Mother Teresa impacted the religious and social aspects of society. She was a faithful woman that directed people to trust in God and follow in Jesus’s example of how to treat people. She reached out and cared for the sick and poor outcasts of society and worked to improve their lives by opening up schools, nursing homes, and shelters. Mother Teresa would be happy with what women are doing today as her charity work was carried out by many other sisters from all over the world. By 1997 the sisters of the Missionaries of Charity numbered around four thousand members and they were established in nearly six hundred foundations in one hundred twenty-three countries and the number continues to grow to this day. Mother Teresa’s ideas and accomplishments have greatly affected the world today. Her organization, the Missionaries of Charity, still reaches out to people in need. But more substantially her example of how one should live a life devoted to their faith has an even bigger impact. Mother Teresa was canonized a saint on September 4, 2016, by Pope Francis and at her canonization, Pope Francis told the crowd â€Å"May she be your model of holiness.† Mother Teresa is a wonderful role model and inspiration to others on how to act on behalf of God today. Through her charitable actions and life-long work for the less fortunate, Mother Teresa impacted the world in a way that few people have done before. It is amazing how he is able to present such controversial revelations given that Clinton is his very close friend. He presented his point bravely leaving no missed point behind. I guess he just showed an objective setting of the situation of Clinton’s administration and the United States government system in general, particularly to the labor sector. With no doubt, he showed, through his book, his deep concern for people. On the other hand, the book, behind its impressing underlying themes, also received criticisms, perhaps from those who were behind the administration of Clinton. They claimed that Reich’s work was just like a fictional work and even claimed that it is a mere propaganda. They added that Reich’s claim were not realistic at all. Describe and evaluate Bruce and Youngs model of face recognition (8+16marks) Bruce young’s model of face recognition starts with structural encoding, where the face is seen and the features are analysed. The model then splits up into separate compartments one for familiar faces and the other for unfamiliar faces. [AO1] The first of these compartments is the name generation system, which consists of eight separate processes. The first stage being the structural encoding where the face perceived is converted in neural impulses for the brain to interpret. [AO1] Followed by Face Recognition Units (FRU’s) where the brain contains stored structural descriptions of familiar faces, followed by the Person Identity Nodes (PINs) where stored information about the known individual’s e. g. their occupation, interests etc. Finally the name is generated; this is stored separately to the other information that is held of the person. [AO1] Bruce and Young believed that the serial nature of this meant that the model only goes in this order e. g. you can’t retrieve the person’s name without knowing personal information about them, however they do believe that you don’t necessarily go through all the stages and can stop at any if the information isn’t sufficient. [AO1] This compartment of the Bruce-young model can explain everyday face recognition problems very well, such as our failure to recognise a familiar face by giving a reasonable explanation of that there is sufficient-stimulation of an FRU for the face to be recognised. [AO2] It goes onto explain the reason why we mis-identify one person for another is because the person being identifies is sufficiently similar to the familiar person and therefore activates an FRU inappropriately. [AO2] Not being able to place a person is effectively explained by the relevant FRU not being activated enough due to the stimulation not being sufficient enough to activate the cognitive system or the PINs and so the information cannot be retrieved. [AO2]And finally it also successfully explains why we are sometimes not able to remember names, which is because of a problem occurring between the PINs and the name generation. [AO2] This model of face recognition also has much support from research studies, particularly those involving the use of brain damaged patients (For example; Young et al. , 1983) who asked 22 people to keep diaries of their everyday errors in person recognition. [AO2] A total of 1,008 errors were recorded and almost 20% of these referred to instances when someone knew alot of information about the person but could not think of their name. In contrast, no diarist reported being able to name a face whilst knowing nothing else about that person. This supports the idea that naming is a separate process. [AO2] Similarly, people often reported a feeling of familiarity but an inability to think of any personal details about the person. This suggests that the face recognition unit has been activated but not the PINs. [AO2] There is also support for the model from case studies of people with brain damage. The PET scanning to view areas of activity in the brain whilst different tasks are performed, has shown that different areas of the model are being accessed (Sergent Signoret, 1992)[AO2] A further study that supports this theory is by Young who asked nurses to keep a diary over an 8 week period about recognising faces. They found the most common problem experienced was remembering information about the person but not their name. This supports the serial nature of Bruce and Young’s model. [AO2] However it could be said that this study is mildly retrospective as the participants wouldn’t fill the diaries in until the end of the day so they might have forgotten what had happened during the day or might have forgotten to fill it in. [AO2] The second compartment are called parallel processes, these processes are able to occur separately of one another. These are able to occur without knowing the person (unfamiliar faces). [AO1] It is believed that after the structural encoding the information is passed to the facial expression analysis where the individual’s expression and speech is analysed e. g. their lip movement. Expression analysis helps us to recognise the angry person in a crowd, etc. [AO1] Like facial-speech analysis and directed visual processing, this relates more to the recognition of unfamiliar faces. After this it is passed to a node that notes other important information e. g. scars. All of these nodes for familiar and unfamiliar are linked to the Cognitive System. [AO1] The model has also been criticised as being descriptive rather than explanatory. It does not for example; explain how expression analysis is initiated, or how we are able to label certain emotions as â€Å"happy â€Å"or â€Å"sad†. [AO2] Although aspects of the model have been well supported by research, some of the components have been less well explained than others components are not all explained fully. CF is most common in whites whose ancestors came from northern Europe. Although it affects all races and ethnic groups it is a lot less common among African Americans, Native Americans, and Asian Americans. Every year about two thousand five hundred babies are born with CF in the United States. Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease. CF is a genetic disease because some individual’s basic building blocks of a gene are altered. This alteration is called a mutation which can cause the body to make defective protein or no protein at all. Children inherit this altered gene from one or both of their parents. For CF to be evident the child must have inherited two abnormal genes, one from each parent. About one in every twenty Americans is an unaffected carrier of an abnormal â€Å"CF gene.† That is about twelve million people who are usually unaware that they are carriers. â€Å"The recessive CF gene can occur in both boys and girls because it is located on non-sex-linked chromosomes called autonomic chromosomes. CF is therefore called an autonomic recessive genetic disease,† (Parker and Parker 14). The CF gene was first identified in 1989. In the past seventeen years a lot has been learned about this gene and its protein product. â€Å"The biochemical abnormality in CF results from a mutation in a gene that produces a protein responsible for the movement through the cell membranes of chloride ions. The protein is called cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR),† (Parker and Parker 16). When this protein is abnormal, â€Å"two of the hallmarks of CF result blockage of the movement of chloride ions and water in the lung and other cells and secretion of abnormal mucus,† (Parker and Parker 16). This makes it difficult for the body to keep organs and lungs clean and healthy because the mucus becomes thick and dry. The mutation that is involved with CF causes the deletion of three of the base pairs in the gene. This in turn, causes a decline in the CFTR protein of amino acid. Because phenylalanine is located in the position 508 of the protein chain, this mutant protein is called deltaF508 CFTR. However, deltaF508 CFTR accounts for only seventy to eighty percent of all CF cases. Various other mutations, over four hundred at the last count seem to be responsible for the remaining CF cases (Parker and Parker 17). Differences in the disease patterns seen in individuals and families probably result from the combined effects of the particular mutation and various, but yet still unknown, factors in the CF patient and his or her environment. There are many different symptoms of CF ranging from a blocked small intestine at birth to rectal pro-lapse which is where part of the rectum protrudes from the anus. One of the most obvious symptoms is salty sweat or skin. One of the most common ways to test for CF is a test called a sweat test. This test measures the amount of salt in a persons sweat. Though this test is most common it is not accurate with newborns because they do not produce enough sweat. Other obvious symptoms include a cough that does not go away, breathing problems, easily worn out from exercise or even regular activities, coughing up mucus that may contain blood or not wanting to eat causing weight loss. COM, â€Å"On average people who live with cystic fibrosis will live into their mid thirties.† Depending on the stage of the disease depends on the actual life expectancy. The advancements in treatments are making it possible for patients to live into their forties and longer. Patients may live a normal life expectancy if they have mild CF. There are three main groups of different types of treatments; there is respiratory therapy which as Cronin states is a therapy that â€Å"slows down lung damage and improves breathing. The focus of this therapy is on reducing infection and getting rid of mucus to keep the lungs healthy.† Cronin also refers to a digestive therapy which â€Å"works to replace certain digestive enzymes, which make sure the body absorbs all the vitamins and minerals it needs, and prevents or treats intestinal blockages.† The third main group of treatment is antibiotics. There are two different types of antibiotics that Cronin talks about in her research; the first group â€Å"may be prescribed to help prevent infections while others may be prescribed to help fight infections.† Other ongoing treatments may include regular visits with the team of doctors involved with the patient’s case or a combination of treatments from the three main groups. If conditions get worse the doctor may order a chest x-ray, or a ct scan. If the patient experiences complications then the doctor may decide surgery is the best way to go. If surgery is needed the doctor may decide on a chest tube to drain the lungs or the doctor may decide that lung transplantation is the best option. Some patients and their families may find it easier to attend support groups or counseling to help them get through their treatments. Two major foundations that support CF are Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) and Lungs for Life Foundation (LFL). LFL was established in 2000 in memory of Edward W. Wlodarski, who died in 1998. This foundation was established so they could provide short term financial assistance to help CF patients and families with emergencies, treatment assistance and special needs assistance. Their goal is to educate the public about CF and to raise funds for programs. CFF was founded in 1955. They are a non-profit donor supported organization. They are the leading organization in the United States. They currently have more then eighty chapters and offices nationwide and they support a network of more than one hundred fifteen accredited CF care centers. CFF hosts more than one thousand two hundred fund-raising events a year ranging from dinner dances to golf tournaments. The CFF is currently actively supporting at least twenty-five potential new treatments currently in development. One of CFF’s big donations every year is from what is considers CFF’s largest grass roots fund raiser, which is held in Bristol, Vermont. Between 1989 and 2005 they had donated more than five hundred ninety-eight thousand dollars. The organizers of this fund-raiser started this â€Å"three day stampede† in 1989 when their grand-daughter was born with CF the exact same day that the isolation of the defective gene was announced. The stampede is an amazing thing to be apart of. For three years now I have helped out in anyway possible. It is a three day event; there is a craft market, a lawn sale, a silent auction, a bake sale, dinner and dance, bingo, and a walk and roll a thon. Every year the biggest local country radio station does their Sunday morning flee market on site and donates their air time and money. At the stampede you can also see many of the children and teens who have CF from a five town area that go to the high school in Bristol. It is amazing to see what a community can to do to make a difference when there is some one they love affected by the disease. Cystic Fibrosis is not a disease we realize is so wide spread because the signs are not always obvious to the human eye. Just because it is not obvious to the human eye does not mean that it is any less serious. CF can be fatal and it cuts a persons life span down dramatically.
